Indexing Service

If you would like to have a subject index in your book, then, once you sign off your final proof, you can enlist the work of one of our professional indexers. They will create a two-level index containing both main entries and subentries customized to your book’s subject matter and target market. An index is a selling feature for non-fiction books that are rich in ready-to-use information (such as business books, self-help books, how-to books, and cookbooks among many others).

Note: Our indexes are not computer-generated, which tend to be of little help since they follow no logic and have no structure other than being an alphabetized list of entries. On the contrary, ours are built by industry professionals trained to create valuable indexes that incorporate best practices and conventions, are relevant to the book's content, and are intuitive to the reader.

How do I get started?
  1. Once you have signed off your final proof, complete the FriesenPress Service Order Form (click here to download). Your Publishing Consultant or Author Account Manager will be glad to assist you with this step.
  2. Upon receipt of your signed form and payment, our professional indexers will prepare your subject index and append it to your book’s print-ready file (note: no more changes to your book’s pages are allowed past the sign off of your proof, since this could significantly affect the index pagination).
How do I calculate the cost for this service?

When you sign off your final proof, your author account manager will calculate the final word count from your print-ready file and supply you with this information To arrive at the final cost divide this figure by 100 and multiply the result by $2.50 (i.e. $2.50 per 100 words).
