Increase the sales potential of your book!
One of the top selling features of books is the quality of the writing – writing that is free of spelling mistakes, errors in punctuation, and incorrect grammar. The use of correct and clear language is instrumental in getting books reviewed, opens doors to the media, and increases the chances of your book being considered by bookstore buyers as well as by our publishing partners. Our professional copyeditors will check your manuscript thoroughly and will make sure that it fulfills the expectations of a discriminating book market.
There are two levels of copyediting available, based on the complexity of the editing task:
- Standard Copyediting is best suited for manuscripts written by authors with a good command of the English language (most manuscripts fall under this category).
- Complex Copyediting is best suited for manuscripts that require extensive syntax changes in order to improve readability. This level of editing is recommended for authors for whom English is a second language, and also for manuscripts that have been translated into English.
How do I get started?
- Select this service as part of your publishing submission process, or if already signed, complete the FriesenPress Service Order Form (click here to download). Your publishing consultant will be glad to assist you with this step.
- Submit your manuscript in Microsoft Word (single file required).
- Your copy editor will mark up your manuscript using Word’s change tracking feature. The edits will be color-coded to clearly show you deletions, additions, changes, and editor suggestions (our editing guidelines are based on the industry-standard writing reference guide, The Chicago Manual of Style, published by The University of Chicago Press).
- Once copyediting is completed you will receive a marked-up Word file with the editor’s recommendations. At this point, your task is to decide which changes to incorporate into your manuscript. As a rule, our editors never permanently alter original copy. As the author, you always make the final decision on all text changes to your work.
How do I calculate the cost for this service?
- Standard Copyediting: count the number of words in your manuscript using your word processor's word count feature, divide this number by 100, and multiply the result by $1.80 (i.e. $1.80 per 100 words).
- Complex Copyediting: count the number of words in your manuscript using your word processor's word count feature, divide this number by 100, and multiply the result by $2.90 (i.e. $2.90 per 100 words).
