For example, our printing plants run exclusively on hydro-electric power, which is a renewable source of clean energy with zero carbon emissions. Friesens is also proud to be one of the first FSC-certified book manufacturers in North America.
Here is a partial list of achievements in the area of the environment:
- 1981 Began recycling paper waste from our presses and turning it into line-up sheets
- 1985 Replaced disposable ink cans with refillable drums
- 1992 Installed silver and solvent recovery systems in all our manufacturing processes
- 1994 Installed high-efficiency lighting throughout our plants
- 1999 Upgraded compressed air systems to reduce energy dependency
- 2003 Received FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certification
- 2004 Produced first entirely “tree-free” Harry Potter edition using 100% post consumer waste paper
- 2006 Converted to a paperless estimating system, saving 285,000 printed pages annually
- 2008 Moved to 100% vegetable-based inks
